What it’s really like working on the road (so far)

We’ve spent the last four weeks journeying through some of Australia’s most breathtaking and remote landscapes in our 20-foot caravan—and with another week and a half still to go, this trip has been nothing short of unforgettable.

Our adventure began in NSW, winding our way to Mildura and then up the Stuart Highway to Alice Springs to experience the energy of the Finke Desert Race. From there, we made our way to Palm Valley, where lush green palms stood in striking contrast to the deep red earth—it was truly something special. We then spent more time off-grid at Finke 2 Mile River Camp, using it as our base to explore the incredible natural beauty of Ellery Creek Big Waterhole and Ormiston Gorge.

Next, we travelled to Kings Canyon, where the setting sun turned the canyon walls to varying shades of vibrant red, each evening—and we even took in the majesty from above with a helicopter flight.

Then came Uluru and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), where we rode bikes around the base of Uluru and watched the sun set over the rock with a cheese platter in hand—one of those truly pinch-me moments.

After looping back to Alice Springs for a necessary car part recall (more on that below), we continued south to Coober Pedy for an opal mine tour, then on to the rugged beauty of the Flinders Ranges. There, we explored ancient ridge lines by 4WD and stayed on a 26,000-acre station that felt like its own world. Now we’re making our way through outback NSW for the final stretch of the trip—grateful, dusty, and absolutely in awe of what we’ve seen so far.

Work Doesn’t Pause—It Adapts

This isn’t the usual getaway where work pauses—my days have been a flexible dance between adventure and responsibility. I’ll catch up on emails and process weekly payroll in the evenings, working the full extent of our travel days in the car for 3–4 hours.

When we arrive at camp, the dump truck is the first thing out, and we all settle into our home for the next one or two nights. My toddler’s laughter fills the afternoons, and when night falls, I’m often replying to messages while the world outside grows still. It’s a balancing act that’s sometimes a little chaotic but always rewarding.

Turning Delays into Opportunities

We had an unexpected delay in Alice Springs due to a car part recall, but it turned out to be more than fine. It gave me the chance to spend a full day doing my workshop via Zoom, catch up on some work, and explore more of Alice Springs than I had planned. Because even while travelling, business responsibilities and requirements don’t pause.

Managing a Compliance Upgrade from the Outback

Alongside the usual bookkeeping work, I’ve also been right in the middle of a big compliance upgrade. That’s meant attending a workshop course, developing and rolling out a full Quality Management System, and staying across a major industry code update—all while living out of a caravan and chasing the many beautiful landscapes across the outback.

Staying Connected, Staying Consistent

The right technology has been my lifeline. Cloud platforms, reliable internet, and a well-organised mobile setup has meant I can offer the same reliable, thorough service my clients expect—even when I’m taking calls with red dust underfoot and the vast expanse of the outback stretching beyond.

What This Journey Has Taught Me

✔️ Planning ahead brings peace of mind. Mapping out my weeks helps me stay on track, especially with important lodgement deadlines.

✔️ Reliable internet is essential. Steady internet connection has been the bridge between remote landscapes and business demands.

✔️ Flexibility isn’t just a strategy—it’s a mindset. Days rarely go exactly as planned (hello, toddler tantrums and unexpected delays), but adapting keeps the journey smooth.

✔️ Work smarter, not harder. Clear workflows, templates, and processes lighten the load, giving me more time to live this life fully.

✔️ It’s okay to slow down and savour the moments. It actually took me over three weeks to really relax and fully soak up this amazing trip. Some of the best memories have come when I’ve archived all the tabs in my mind and simply been present with my family.

This trip has reminded me why I love what I do—it’s about crafting a business that supports life’s joys, not one that feels like a burden. Helping other small business owners find that balance is what drives me every day.

If you’ve ever dreamed of more freedom, more flexibility, and more connection to what truly matters, I’m here to tell you it’s possible—with the right support and mindset.

And yes, we’ve been blessed with some unforgettable sunrises along the way.
